The Southern Christian Leadership Conference
(SCLC) was founded on February 14, 1957,
SCLC - Dayton Chapter, is a
non-profit minority community based predominantly African-American organization
that has been in existence for 48 years. The national organization adopted
nonviolent mass action as the cornerstone of strategy, the affiliation of local
community organizations with SCLC across the South, and a determination to make
the SCLC movement open to all, regardless of race, religion, or background. SCLC
is a now a nation wide organization made up of chapters and affiliates with
programs that affect the lives of all Americans: north, south, east and west.
Its sphere of influence and interests has become international in scope because
the human rights movement transcends national boundaries.
MISSION:
In the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the Southern Christian Leadership
Conference (SCLC) is renewing its commitment to bring about the promise of ˇ°one
nation, under God, indivisibleˇ± and its commitment to activate the ˇ°strength to
loveˇ± within the community of humankind.
THE ORGANIZATION:
The SCLC is a nonprofit, non-sectarian, inter-faith, advocacy organization that
is committed to non-violent action to achieve social, economic, and political
justice.

ORGANIZATION FOCUS:
To promote spiritual principles within our membership and local communities; to
educate youth and adults in the areas of personal responsibility, leadership
potential, and community service; to ensure economic justice and civil rights in
the areas of discrimination and affirmative action; and to eradicate
environmental classism and racism wherever it exists.
WHO WE ARE:
The SCLC consists of local chapters and affiliates from around the country which
support the organization and work in their own community to implement national
programs such as voter registration, improvement of education and direct action
against racial injustice.
MISSION STATEMENT:
SCLC Dayton Chapter operates under the mission statement: To serve the minority community by developing beneficial
alliances and providing the highest quality services for empowerment and
self-sufficiency; to challenge our youth to seek those avenues that promote
rising above barriers that inhibit their productivity; and to serve as an
advocate for the underserved members of our community; promote health care, and
political awareness; address and seek resolution to all issues relating to
violence in any form.

Case Management, Advocacy, Risk Reduction Education, Violence Prevention
Programs, Domestic Violence Housing, Peer Group workshops, Feeder Programs,
Legal Redress, Conflict Resolution Training, Adult and Youth Mentoring,
