Youth Development
PROGRAM SUMMARY: Drill, known as Step, or Stomp depending on where one is from, is a unique form of dance that includes a blend of precision drills, athletics. chanting, rhyme, and use of props that make the competitions a real challenge to participating teams and a thrill to those watching the action. The Sclc Community Based Drill Team & Percussion Squad of Dayton Ohio was established in 1993. Known as a unique prevention skill-building program that focuses on delinquency prevention, academic achievement, and family development by providing an arts-based percussion program. The program provides percussion training, early intervention, community involvement, role modeling, social support, and educational experiences to combat juvenile delinqueny and ???? Since the group¡¯s inception, over 800 youth have participated today the organization has a membership count of 80+, ranging from ages 4-22. Primary focus is to advocate high academic standards and participation in positive community programs. The program allows young people to excel in a cooperatively enhanced environment while providing a safe haven to showcase accomplishments. Members are required to maintain a C+ grade point average and encouraged to attend college. PURPOSE: Currently, there is a crisis in music education in the Dayton Public and Surrounding areas and only a fraction of middle-school students have any access to an education in the arts. High school music educators are overwhelmed with students with no previous knowledge of music, and those disadvantaged students who could benefit the most from an investment in creative learning are going without. SCLC not only provides an introduction to the fundamentals of music, it also provides an enriching environment for young people at a crucial juncture in their lives.
The Dance/Drill component provides our young ladies with the opportunity to develop musical/visual concepts, skills, and interpretations. Program focuses upon choreography to enhance the creativity of percussion students, increase knowledge of dance & flag technique, and develop group interaction skills and physical coordination. We pride ourselves in having a "crowd-appealing" show that is challenging, fun, and rewarding for the students and audience Percussion instruction provides skills in reading music and playing various percussion instruments for youth ages 5 to 19. The program utilizes drums and percussion to enhance at risk inner city youth creativity, math education, and self esteem. The program is targeted to youth who do not receive musical instruction as a part of their school curriculum and do not have the financial resources to access music education elsewhere. By rekindling the marching band culture for youths, we commit ourselves to preserving our city's musical legacy and most importantly providing a productive alternative to street life. The program offers music instruction at three levels: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. Each prospective student auditions in order to be placed in the appropriate level according to his/her proficiency with music. The Beginner Class will focus on a basic understanding of the fundamentals of music, including reading and performance techniques. Intermediate students will be trained in additional music reading skills and the ability to perform in front of an audience. Advanced students will be trained in ensemble performance and choreography and will perform in various competitions to promote, inspire confidence, and pride. While learning to play music, students will be making productive use of time that might otherwise be squandered. Inner-city youth have few options for structured interaction. Consequently, it is easier for a ten year-old to get drugs or weapons in his hands than it is for him/her to obtain an instrument, sports equipment, or modern technology. The discipline of music education combined with positive reinforcement, physical training, and academic assistance that will result in: 1) less children being attracted to ¡°street life¡± for lack of anything else to do; 2) fewer children dropping out of school because they cannot get the personal attention to succeed academically; 3) a healthier population; 4) greater sense of self-worth and self-esteem; and 5) thereby reducing crime. Sclc Dance/Flag & Percussionist have amazed fans and spectators around the country with their ability to perform difficult routines while mastering the drum to perfection GOAL: Our goal is to provide a structured alternative music & arts activity that will have a positive impact on decision-making and educational outcomes, ultimately resulting in a decrease in involvement with the juvenile justice system, an increase in school attitude for academic success, and a venue for family unity and togetherness. EVALUATION: We evaluate the success of our program by the behavior and attitudes of our students. We have found that our students demonstrate positive change in behavior at school and in the community as evidenced by surveys to education professionals, family and other community contacts.
